Grounds & Gardens
Surrounded by fabulous open countryside in the designated AONB around the lower Wye Valley, the lovely old mansion is set within it's own 25 acres of landscaped garden, field and woodland. The location is totally isolated from traffic noise and city bustle.
A labyrinth of paths and steps connect with lawns and terraces to form the grounds surrounding the house. The mature gardens contain many unusual trees and shrubs, whilst concealing endless interesting niches found only by the more adventurous explorer.
The adjoining 8 acre wood has it's own ecosystem of plants and wildlife and is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It contains a scenic circular walk along with evidence of an ancient millstone quarry. The Tudor lawn around the back of the house can be used for team building activities for example, or even staging a wedding reception for up to 150 people. It is floodlit at night.
The lawn expands into a large patio area alongside the house. This southfacing terrace basks in sunshine and gives the opportunity to appreciate the true beauty of the open countryside. Breath-taking views extend over the Usk Valley, revealing the first range of hills of the South Welsh Valleys, some 23 miles away in the distant background. This patio also provides a wonderful spot for BBQs on summer evenings, or viewing spectacular sunsets during the autumn.
The magnificent scenery at Caer Llan changes throughout the year, each season providing it's own unique beauty. There is an additional terrace with an unusual stand on sun dial. The terrace also has a large imoveable stone BBQ which can quite happily cook for up to 100 people. The berm house roof has a secluded lawn and alpine garden with towering trees above and panoramic views. A stone spiral staircase provides access to the end of this roof garden. The large car park has 2 access ramps descending from the main driveway. The area provides parking space for up to 25 cars. There is overspill parking for another 10 - 15 cars in the area immediately in front of the main house. This same area is suitable for coach parking.
The picturesque outdoor swimming pool overlooks the valley's roaming fields and distant mountains and is available for use during the summer months. There is no life guard in attendance. Consequently, we ask guests to follow our clearly displayed guidelines for safe swimming, and also to ensure that children under 14 are supervised by adults when using the pool.
